Richard Gregory Freeland, II Scholarship Program
The family of the late Richard Gregory Freeland, II recognizes the importance of education for the next generation. A good education is one factor that helps level the playing field in our society. Therefore, the family has established an educational scholarship fund in memory of their 50 day old son who passed away in 1992, to assist deserving high school graduates in their quest for an education that will help prepare them for the challenges life will bring. By honoring exceptional students with this scholarship, we hope to encourage students to continue their education beyond high school. Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of scholastic achievement, leadership, extracurricular activities, and service to the school and community. The scholarships will be awarded to those applicants who meet and/or exceed the eligibility criteria. Each recipient will receive a scholarship ranging from $500 - $2,000 .
Over the past three years, the Freeland Scholarship program has funded $137,000 in scholarships to 31 students attending colleges and universities such as the University of Maryland, College Park and Eastern Shore, North Carolina Chapel Hill, Morehouse College, North Carolina A&T, University of Virginia, Howard University, Delaware State, Florida A&M University, Tufts University, etc. The first Freeland Scholars are expected to graduate with the class of 2008 and I couldn't be more proud, stated the Kathryn B. Freeland, Scholarship Chairperson.
